More Funds for “Knob and Tube” Rewiring

Good news! Massachusetts has increased funds for insulating homes with older wiring. Many people have not been able to insulate because their homes have an old fashioned kind of wiring called “knob and tube.” Now, the Mass Save “Barrier Mitigation Grant” of up to $3,000 can reduce the cost of replacing those old wires. Follow these three steps to insulate your home and move forward on the path to a more comfortable and affordable home.
- Figure it out
To figure out if this grant could help you, ask a licensed electrician to find out if your home has any active “knob and tube” wiring, because you want to insulate. If you need a referral, just ask your Energy Adviser.
- Fill it out
Make sure you have the “Pre-Weatherization Barrier Mitigation Incentive Form” to give to the electrician. This form should be in the packet of materials that you received during your Home Energy Assessment. If you can’t locate it, call your Energy Adviser or 617-635-SAVE (7283) to request a copy of it.
If the electrician finds that you do NOT have active “knob and tube”, they can sign your “Pre-Weatherization” form, and you’ll be ready to insulate. (Keep the receipt from the electrician because you will get a credit on your insulation bill of up to $250 for the electrical evaluation.)
- Fix it
If your electrician does find active “knob and tube” wiring, get a written estimate for the cost of replacement wiring. If possible, they should give you separate estimates for the attic and the basement. This way, you might be able to break the project into stages. Once you have the estimate, you can tell Mass Save that you’re ready to apply for a Barrier Mitigation Grant. Need more funds? Ask your Energy Adviser about other funding sources like the Mass Save HEAT Loan and the Boston Home Center.
